School under the A-Bomb

Fukuromachi Municipal Elementary School’s Peace Museum was established in a section of the school’s original building. This reinforced concrete building, which was completed in 1937, was considered an exceptionally modern building at the time, consisting of a basement and three above-ground floors, complete with flush toilets and a garbage chute.

August 6, 1945, the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and on the school.

From the blast and the intense heat created by the Atomic Bomb the school was destroyed, to become a relic with only the shell of the building left standing. However, in the days following the blast, the school became not only a shelter for those ‘Hibakusha’ exposed to the A-Bomb, but a hub for students, teachers and local residents alike to enquire after the safety of their families and neighbors.

Anything that would burn, was incinerated with the force of the blast, with soot blackened concrete walls and small pieces of chalk littering the classroom floors all that remained. People used this chalk to leave desperate messages for their loved ones upon the blackened walls. We can’t even begin to imagine what they were feeling, thinking as they inscribed their messages.

In the months and years to follow, the school made its recovery, its buildings repaired. The messages were hidden behind blackboards, or else under the whitewash on the newly re-plastered walls. From this time on, the building became known as the ‘west wing’ and saw scores of children pass through its doors.

Over 50 years on, the considerably aged school building was demolished, to be rebuilt and modernized in a joint structure with, among others, the Hiroshima Municipal Town Development and Exchange Plaza in 2002. At the time of renovation, the old west wing became the Fukuromachi Elementary School Peace Museum with its messages on the blackened walls, carbonized wooden blocks and warped steel basement door preserved.
